2022: Summiting Mount Rainier
June 15, 2022 @ 8:00 am – June 19, 2022 @ 5:00 pm UTC+0
Waypoint Vets and Veteran Adventure Group are teaming up to deliver an intense and incredibly rewarding hike up to the summit of Mount Rainier in Washington State. JUNE 2022: Exact Dates To Be Determined. This is a 5 day adventure – 3 Days of Mountaineering, 2 Days of Travel.
Veterans will tackle a 9,000′ elevation gain, taking in surreal views and challenging terrain along the way. A definite bucket list achievement!! We have the capacity to fully outfit you, and will cover your travel, meals, transport and lodging. Recommended training: Weighted hikes. Train toward being able to handle a 1,000′ elevation gain / per hour for 5-6 consecutive hours while wearing a 45-50 lb pack.
Day 1: TRAVEL DAY
Veterans travel / fly to Washington State, transport to lodging. We will conduct gear layouts, fine tune our packs, do grocery store runs, and have dinner together.
Day 2: Set out toward Mount Rainier at 0600 and arrive by 0800 at “Paradise”, with a stop at Whittaker’s Mountaineering Outfitters. We will do one final gear check and begin our hike up to Camp Muir (4,500′ elevation gain). Upon arriving at base camp, we will set up tents, make water, eat, and rest.
Day 3: Breakfast, then mountaineering school. We expect everyone to participate in the school regardless of skill level. We will eat a late lunch and do a brief on the conditions. Based on the condition report, we will set a time to wake up for our summit push (typically between 11pm and 3am). It’s encouraged to rest before we set out.
Day 4: Set out toward Summit. Start time is typically between 11:00pm and 3:00am. Depending on the conditions, we will spend no longer than 1 hour at the summit. We will then head back to Camp. When we arrive back Muir, we’ll have about an hour to recover, repack, and then we’ll head back down to our starting point. Usually teams get back to Paradise anywhere between 4-7pm. This will be a long, difficult day with nearly constant movement.
Day 5: We will collect, clean, and inspect all gear, say our goodbyes, then flights home.
